Basically, tasting the South Tyroleans is always cause for joy. The average qualities are pleasingly high, and we hardly ever encounter really weak samples any more anyway. In the last 20 years, the wines of the region have really only gone up.
IDM South Tyrol/Florian Andergassen

Recently, however, the tasting days on which we dealt with South Tyrol became more and more exhausting. Because here, too, climate change is clearly making itself felt in the form of ever higher alcohol levels in the wines.

With Gewürztraminer we have been used to this for a long time, but in the meantime we have also reached 14% for most of the other varieties in our tasting series, which are staggered according to alcohol, often after just a few wines, and at the end of the tasting it is not uncommon for it to be 15%. For most wine drinkers, the carefree drinking fun should be over by then, no matter how good the wine tastes.

It is imperative to take countermeasures here. Some South Tyrolean producers are already demonstrating that viticulture is not helpless in the face of global warming, and not only at high altitudes, by producing much lighter yet remarkably expressive wines.

Surprisingly, many Pinot Noirs are developing completely against the trend. So far, the South Tyrolean representatives of Pinot Noir have not been fine enough for higher consecrations. This year, however, we tasted a whole series of astonishingly fresh, polished and elegant wines that made us forget the other efforts of tasting for a while. We could get used to this trend.

We have tasted well over 300 wines for this BEST OF, the best of which we present to you here as well as in PDF as well. You can find links to all the wines by clicking on the respective headings. We would like to take this opportunity to recommend the Vernatsch to you. These wines, which are often extremely easy to drink, but at the same time surprisingly complex and fine when they are at their best, usually find it a little difficult to make it into a list of best wines according to points. But when it comes to drinking pleasure, also and especially in the upcoming warm season, it is one of our favourites.
