According to media reports, the Spanish cava producer Freixenet is to be taken over by the German beverage company Henkell & Co. As the Catalan business magazine "Economia Digital" reports, negotiations on the sale are to be concluded within the next few days. According to this, Henkell will take over the majority of 51 percent of Freixenet in May, when the business year ends. So far, however, the parties involved have not officially confirmed the possible takeover.

Rumours had already become public in April 2016 that the cava producer had received a buy-out offer. In this context, Henkell had confirmed "a possible cooperation" at that time. According to "Economia Digital", the political conditions in Catalonia had considerably delayed the sale.

Freixenet is considered as the best-known brand name in the Spanish wine industry. The company currently has 18 production sites and wineries in three continents. Founded in 1861, the cava house is owned in three parts by the family of entrepreneur Jose Ferrer.
