In 2018, global wine production will have risen by twelve percent again after the historic low last year. According to an initial estimate by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine, winegrowers brought 282 million hectolitres into their cellars - after 251 million hectolitres the previous year. This is one of the best results since the year 2000, the organisation announced on Friday in Paris according to the news agency dpa. However, there were large regional differences due to weather conditions.

Italy has defended its first place in the ranking of the most important wine producing countries in 2018. There, 48.5 million hectolitres of wine were pressed, an increase of 14 percent over the previous year. In France, the number two wine producing country according to the statistics, production rose by 27 per cent to 46.4 million hectolitres and in Spain, in third place, by 26 per cent to 40.9 million hectolitres. The three traditional European wine countries together produce almost half of the total world production.

According to the estimate, Germany is in ninth place after an increase of 31 percent. According to this, the winegrowers there were able to produce 9.8 million hectolitres. This is the highest production level in the last ten years.
