World production of sparkling wine increased by 57 per cent between 2002 and 2018, reaching 20 million hectolitres for the first time. This is the result of a study by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) with data from 82 countries from 2002 and 2018. Just under half of the production takes place in Italy (27 percent) and France (22 percent). Germany follows with 14 percent, Spain with eleven percent and the USA with six percent. According to the OIV figures, these countries produce 80 percent of the world's sparkling wines.

The reason for the growing production is the increasing demand. According to the figures, sparkling wines accounted for about five percent of global wine sales in 2008. By 2017, this share will have risen to a record eight percent. On average, global consumption has grown by an annual average of three percent.

The biggest increase in production in 2018 was recorded by Italy with 5.3 million hl, or ten percent of the volume of wine. Germany produced one of the largest quantities of sparkling wine in the world in 2018 at 2.8 million hl. Nevertheless, the volume fell slightly below the average of the past ten years, which is three million hl.

Germany is also the world champion in consumption: 17 percent of all wines sold here are now sparkling wines according to the OIV. This figure is even higher than in France and the USA, where it only reaches 14 percent in each case. In Italy, the figure is only eight percent.
