Over the next five years, the Corbières wine-growing region in the Languedoc (South of France) wants to work in a much more environmentally friendly way than before. The winegrowers' association responsible for 10,000 hectares of vineyards has decided that producers must commit to a recognised certification procedure for organic or sustainable production by 2014. Around 13,000 ha are already being cultivated ecologically according to EU criteria. All other producers will have to decide in five years' time on a production method according to EU organic guidelines, Terra Vitis, HVE3 or ISO 26,000.

Daniel Sendrous, chairman of the association, explained that the decision was made due to the massive demand from customers and buyers for more natural cultivation methods than before. A great many producers have chosen the Haut Valeur Environnementale Level 3 (HVE3) standard, which aims above all to protect and promote biodiversity in the vineyards. It provides for mechanical soil cultivation instead of the use of pesticides.
