Worldwide wine production has recovered significantly in 2018 after the very small quantity in 2017. According to the latest figures from the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), 292 million hectolitres of wine were produced last year, 17 percent more than in 2017 and the largest quantity since 2000. In terms of volume, this corresponds to 38.9 billion bottles of wine.

In 2018, Italy will remain the world's largest producer for the fourth consecutive year. There, 54.8 million hectolitres were produced, a further increase of a whopping 29 percent over 2017, with France in second place with 48.6 million hectolitres and a 34 percent increase over the previous year. Spain is in third place with 44.4 million hectolitres, an increase of 37 percent over 2017. The USA produced 23.9 million hectolitres, only two percent more than in 2017. In China, on the other hand, the volume of wine produced was drastically reduced: at 9.1 million hectolitres, the figure for 2018 was 22 percent lower than in the previous year.
