German consumers bought slightly less wine last year. As the German Wine Institute (DWI) reported on the basis of the latest GfK wine market analysis, wine sales in 2019 fell by 0.9% compared to the previous year.

Per capita wine consumption also declined slightly in the past wine year. This figure covers total wine consumption, including the quantities of wine consumed outside the home. It amounted to 20.1 litres of wine per person and year, which represents a decline of 0.4 litres compared with the same period last year. Since 2000, wine per capita consumption in Germany has been between 20 and 21 litres. The German Winegrowers' Association, on the other hand, reported a consumption of 23.4 litres per capita a few days ago.

According to the figures, the consumption of sparkling wine has remained unchanged compared to the same period last year, at 3.3 litres per capita and year.

According to GfK figures, the total volume of wine and sparkling wine consumed by Germany's 83 million inhabitants amounted to 19.5 million hectolitres in the last wine year. This is divided into 16.7 million hectolitres of wine and 2.8 million hectolitres of sparkling wine.
