In 2017, world trade in wine will increase by 3.4 percent in terms of volume to 108 million hl compared to 2016 and by 4.8 percent in terms of value to around 30 billion euros. This was reported by Jean Marie Aurand, Director General of the Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) at the 41st General Congress of the Association in Punta del Este.

According to the report, in 2017 the global area under vines was 7.534 million hectares, a decrease of around 24,000 ha compared to 2016. Spain continues to lead the way with a wine-growing area of 967,000 ha, followed by China with 870,000 ha and France with 786,000 ha. According to the figures, the growth of the Chinese vineyard area continues. Between 2016 and 2017 it increased by 6,000 ha. The decline in the area under vines in the European Union, on the other hand, has slowed down and now stands at 3.3 million ha.

World wine production in 2018 is estimated by the OIV at 279 million hectolitres, an increase of 13% compared to 2017. Production in 2018 is expected to be one of the highest since 2000.

According to the figures, global wine consumption in 2017 is expected to increase slightly by 0.8 per cent compared to 2016 and is estimated by the OIV at around 244 million hl. In the traditional consumer countries, wine consumption continues to decline or stagnate to the benefit of new consumer countries. The period from 2000 to 2017 is characterised by a shift in wine consumption towards exports: Wine is increasingly being consumed outside the country where it was produced.

In terms of wine consumption, the United States has maintained its position as the world's largest consumer since 2011 with 32.6 million hl, followed by France (27.0 million hl), Italy (22.6 million hl), Germany (20.1 million hl) and China (17.9 million hl).
