The renowned Portuguese winery Esporão from the Alentejo has taken over Quinta do Ameal in the Vinho Verde wine region. Founded in 1973, the company with 30 hectares of vineyards is considered a pioneer of the regional grape variety Loureiro. The previous owner and winemaker Pedro Araújo will continue his work.

Esporão currently produces around twelve million litres of wine per year, generating a turnover of around 50 million euros. In 2008, the owners took over the Quinta das Murças winery in the Douro region, followed by the Sovina craft beer brewery in 2017. Esporao is also the owner of the Monte Velho wine brand. The purchase price has not been disclosed.
