The Federal Statistical Office has published the final figures for the 2017 wine harvest. According to these figures, 7.51 million hectolitres were brought into the cellars in Germany last year. That is about 17 percent less than in 2016.

The harvest was particularly small in Wuerttemberg: Winegrowers there brought in 27.5 percent less than in 2016. The minus was 23.2 percent on the Moselle, 23 percent in Rheinhessen and 22 percent in Baden. A larger harvest than 2016 was only in Saale-Unstrut. Here the quantity increased by 2.4 percent. Franconia had only minimal losses: here the harvest was only 2.2 percent less than in the previous year.

Overall, white wine was more affected by the weather problems than red wine. In Germany, 4.64 million hectolitres of white wine were harvested, around 19 percent less than in 2016. The decline in red wine was 14.3 percent. Among the grape varieties, Riesling and Müller-Thurgau were the worst affected with a minus of 21.3 and 20.4 percent respectively. Less affected by the weather are Pinot Blanc with a minus of 4.8 percent and Pinot Gris with an eleven percent smaller harvest.
