In 2019, the German wine growing area grew by a further 305 ha to around 103,000 ha. This is reported by "Der deutsche Weinbau". The winegrowers had applied for about 756 hectares for new plantations. The Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food has approved just under 143 hectares of vineyards in Rhinehesse alone, and about 30 hectares each in the Franconian and Palatinate growing regions. Almost three quarters of the applications and about 60 percent of the approved areas come from Rhineland-Palatinate. Each year, a maximum of 0.3 percent of the previous year's vineyard area may be newly planted in Germany.
