At the auction of 855 bottles and 209 magnums from the private wine cellar of the world-famous Burgundy winemaker Henri Jayer, who died in 2006, the Swiss auction house Baghera Wines achieved the record result of 34.5 million Swiss francs, equivalent to around 30 million euros. This is the highest result ever achieved at a wine auction and sets a new reference, the auction house announced.

At the auction at the Domaine de Châteauvieux near Geneva with about 100 interested parties and 215 lots, a 1978 Magnum Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros-Parantoux was knocked down for 144,000 Swiss Francs, six 1999 Magnums of the same wine for a total of 528,000 Swiss Francs and 15 Magnums from vintages from 1978 to 2001 for 1.16 million Swiss Francs. Irrespective of size, each bottle auctioned achieved the record price of 32,300 Swiss francs on average, equivalent to around 28,000 euros. That is the price of a middle-class car.

The decisive factor for the high prices was that the wines were brought to the auction by Jayer's daughters from his private cellar. Since their wines were very often offered forged, the auction house wrote that this guaranteed the authenticity of the wines.
