The Austrian wine retail chain "Wein & Co" is possibly to be sold to the European wine dealer Hawesko from Hamburg. This was reported by the Viennese daily newspaper "Der Standard" with reference to insiders.

Hawesko, to which the chain "Jacques' Wein-Depot" also belongs, is almost ten times as big as Wein & Co. with a turnover of around 480 million euros at last count. With almost three million bottles of wine, a turnover of around 53 million euros was generated there in the last financial year.

There were already rumours about a sale of the Austrian wine dealer three years ago, reports Der Standard. Its founder Heinz Kammerer did not confirm the sale at the request of the daily newspaper, but admitted that he had to "think of his successor" in view of the approaching 70th birthday. There are "always contacts, I get five offers a year", Kammerer told the "Standard".

After a restructuring phase, he rates his retail chain as "well positioned". Kammerer had some branches closed and currently has 20 shops and around 280 employees. The logistics were outsourced to the railway subsidiary Schenker. After a loss of 2.5 million euros in the short year 2015, "Standard" reports a minus before taxes of 479,000 euros for 2016 (until the end of September). For the past year, the balance sheet of which is not yet available, however, profits are once again in prospect. "We have done a lot on the cost side. Now we are fit for the future," says Kammerer. Strong growth was recorded by Wein & Co, especially in online retailing.

Hawesko did not want to comment on the rumours. However, the company wants to continue to grow through acquisitions. They are to be financed with the constant profits of the past. Most recently, Hawesko took over the majority of WeinArt and thus also of Grand Cru Select.
