The VDP winegrowers have finished the 2018 harvest. This was announced by the association. The 2018 wine year had been "another year of weather extremes". The harvest had started "historically early". However, the winegrowers were able to take their time during the harvest due to the sunny, stable weather.

"More and more, the importance of the optimal harvest day is coming to the fore for VDP winegrowers. Starting early, harvesting the vineyards perfectly and then harvesting the just ripe grapes quickly in a second and third pass. This sure instinct was particularly important in 2018," said VDP President Steffen Christmann.

After the soil's water reservoirs had been well filled by the heavy rainfall in January, the cold temperatures in February and March had ensured that the budding began in mid-April. After that, the unusually stable period of fine weather began, which lasted until the harvest. The unusually stable period of good weather, which lasted until the harvest, was followed by the unusually stable period of good weather, which lasted until the harvest and led to record-breaking vine growth due to the consistently high temperatures and the initially large water reserves in the soil. The winegrowers therefore had to carry out the manual work in the vineyard more flexibly and in a shorter time window.

From the middle of the year onwards, it hardly rained at all. The water supply for the vines had become the "dominant topic of the year 2018". While old vines are deeply rooted in the soil and coped well with the drought and summer heat, younger vines in particular suffered from the lack of rain from mid-July onwards. Many VDP winegrowers had therefore invested in drip irrigation for young vines and for vineyards susceptible to drought stress. However, consistent yield reduction, targeted foliage work and proper soil cultivation were also important to relieve the vines.
