The Association of Prädikat Winegrowers (VDP ) draws a positive balance for its 195 member wineries in 2017. According to the now published statistical economic data of the VDP estates, Grosse Gewächse became more expensive by an average of two euros last year. According to the VDP, the sales volume was 336 million euros, with 29 million bottles now sold, an increase of six per cent compared to the previous year.

The average prices per 0.75-litre bottle rose again in all four quality segments. For estate wine, the ten-euro mark was exceeded in 2017; in 2016, the average price was still 9.70 euros. The local wine cost 13.20 euros (2017: 12.70 euros), the wines from first sites fetched 17 euros per bottle. The Große Gewächsen achieved an average price of 34 euros; this category also grew by six percent in 2017.

Direct sales from the winery were again the strongest sales channel for the wineries last year at 45 percent (2017: 42 percent). However, supermarkets are also becoming increasingly important for the VDP estates: food retailers, for example, accounted for twelve per cent of sales, alongside the classic specialist wine trade with 25 per cent, which is now a "noteworthy size". Exports rose slightly to 24 per cent in 2017.

The association is concerned about the low harvest volumes of the previous year due to the weather, which would lead to bottlenecks and "stricter allocation of wines", especially in the premium segment.
