The 2017 vintage is characterized by an unusually early grape ripening. Accordingly, the main grape harvest with the varieties Frühburgunder, Müller-Thurgau and Dornfelder has begun early in many German growing regions.

Thanks to the predominantly sunny weather of recent weeks, the sugar content of the grapes has increased significantly, reported the German Wine Institute (DWI) in Bodenheim. In some regions, the vines showed a developmental advantage of two weeks over the long-term average. The current weather in the wine regions with warm, sunny days and cool nights is also very conducive to the development of the aromas in the berries.

Since many grape varieties are currently reaching harvest maturity at the same time, the DWI believes that this year's harvest will be relatively quick. Even the Riesling, which is normally harvested mainly in October, should be ready for harvesting in 2017, in part as early as mid-September. Continuing dry weather over the next few weeks gives the winegrowers hope for a qualitatively very good vintage with grapes in good health.

Due to the frost damage in spring, the expected volume is below the long-term average yield of nine million hectolitres nationwide.
