Grape prices in Champagne have risen sharply this year despite the large harvest. Prices this year are about two to five percent higher than in 2017, reported Bruno Paillard, owner of Champagne Paillard, chairman of the supervisory board of Lanson and "Président de la Commission Communication et Appellation" of the CIVC producers' association. He told the magazine "Drinks Business" that grapes from top sites are significantly more expensive. According to this, the average price of 6.20 euros per kilogram is above six euros for the first time. In 2006 the average price was still 4.81 euros. According to Paillard there is a margin of over 20 percent. Grapes harvested in less exposed vineyards cost about 5.50 euros, while champagne houses would pay up to eight euros per kilogram for those from top locations

Dhe high prices were due to the very strong demand from producers, explained Paillard. The winegrowers are not responsible for the increases. However, the harvest volumes this year are exceptionally high: normally, there is a four-stage quality model in Champagne, from 4000 kg per hectare up to 16,000 kg. This year, however, the harvest would be between 5000 kg and 20,000 kg per hectare
