The VDP, together with the magazine "Meiningers Sommelier", once again awarded the "Grape Eagle Sommeliers" at the opening of the Wine Exchange in Mainz. The association had called on Germany's sommeliers to apply with the best concept for local wines.

First place went to Marcella Schäfer, sommelière at the Ente restaurant of the Nassauer Hof hotel in Wiesbaden. Her goals were to increase sales by the glass, to establish local wines as an accompaniment to food and to show the complexity of a region's taste. Under the motto "local heroes by glass", she offers five local Rheingau wines with five creations from the kitchen via the so-called "Suitepads". The chosen combinations are served in the room.

The jury was also convinced by the fact that the local wines are summarised on an extra page in the wine list. Under the heading "local heroes - every place an individual", the guest's attention is drawn to these wines.

The jury awarded second place to Silvio Nitzsche's Wein|Kultur|Bar in Dreden. His Weinbagilt is considered one of the best wine bars in Germany. Silvio Nitzsche understood "what a treasure the local wines in the assortment of many wineries" would be: they are "high-class wines at an unspeakable price-pleasure ratio".

The jury awarded third place twice: Firstly, it went to one of the hottest wine bars in Rheinhessen, the Laurenz Weinbar in Mainz. Andreas Schnura and Matthias Pohlers know how to appreciate the value of local wines. They are used at Laurenz in the open bar, recommended in the menu accompaniment - and the cellar book also contains matured local wines.

Sonja and Steffen Ruggaber from Restaurant Lamm in Vaihingen-Rosswag came in third. Their wine list is exclusively stocked with German wines. The VDP local wines are prominently represented, often even two of one winemaker are offered and used as wine accompaniment to the menu.
