With the 2018 vintage, Styria will have a new system of origin. This will be divided according to the three Styrian wine-growing regions into Südsteiermark DAC, Vulkanland Steiermark DAC and Weststeiermark DAC, according to Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM).

After long and sometimes controversial negotiations, those responsible for the Styrian wine industry decided on a three-level pyramid of origin, which is divided - in ascending order - into regional wines, local wines and vineyard wines (single vineyards). The traditional diversity of grape varieties will also be preserved in the new system of origin, whereby the focus for local and ried wines will be on locally predominant leading varieties.

According to ÖWM, the marketing deadlines have been chosen in such a way that the wines have enough time to develop their typical origin character and to fully develop their potential: For regional wines, the earliest sales date is 1 March, for local wines and wines from vineyards, 1 May of the year following the harvest.

"In order to successfully position Styria and its three wine-growing regions in the future, it is necessary to point out the unique selling points and special features of the region. In the wine industry, origin is the most important element to stand out from competitors and thus to be able to market the wines successfully," Werner Luttenberger, Managing Director of Wein Steiermark, comments on the resolutions.

"The 'Styrian origin system' - with the three DACs West Styria, South Styria and Vulkanland Styria - is the result of a unique democratic process in the history of Styrian wine," explains Johann Dreisiebner, chairman of the Regional Wine Committee Styria... "With quality-enhancing, clear rules for production and market, a new era for Styrian wine will begin with the 2018 vintage."

ÖWM Managing Director Willi Klinger is also satisfied: "Styria has taken a long time to decide on a new origin regulation for wine, and that is a good thing! Because in the course of countless discussions, meetings and also disputes, we have succeeded in achieving a technically excellent and beneficial result for everyone."

With the implementation of the Styrian DAC system, the number of Austrian DAC areas rises to a total of 13.
