An international jury of experts has chosen Stefan Metzner as the winner of the "Concours Européen des Ambassadeurs du Champagne 2018". This is the second time that the "Champagne Ambassador" award has gone to Germany. In 2007, Ingeborg Aug won the European title. The theme of the year was "Disgorgement and Dosage in Champagne Production".

Stefan Metzner is co-owner of the "Weininstitut München", which offers the first three levels of the WSET training programme for wine and spirits as well as its own courses in Munich. After a gastronomic apprenticeship, he gained experience as a restaurant manager in Zermatt. The passionate wine lover worked as a sommelier in several star restaurants, managed a wine trade for ten years and specialised as an independent sommelier and consultant for the gastronomy.

The international final of the Champagne Ambassadors competition took place for the twelfth time on 9 November 2017. Nine participants, who each won the national decision in their country, presented their expertise to a jury of nine wine experts and journalists. The jury is composed of one representative from each of the participating countries. The jurors abstain from voting on the candidate from their own country. The European award winners were honoured at a gala at Champagne Mailly Grand Cru. Besides Stefan Metzner, the Belgian Kristel Balcaen from Ghent and the Italian Pietro Palma from Prato were on the podium.
