This year, for the fifth time, the German Wine Institute (DWI), in cooperation with the mineral water producer Selters, awarded seven restaurants the title "Excellent Wine Gastronomy" at the Prowein trade fair in Düsseldorf. According to the DWI, they are "particularly committed to the wines from the German wine regions".

Among the gourmet restaurants, the jury chose the Berlin restaurant "Rutz" as the winner. In the new category of upscale gastronomy, the prize went to "Die Insel am Maschsee" in Hanover, and Dresden's "Weinzentrale" was awarded in the category of wine gastronomy. The jury chose the restaurant "Yamas" in Ulm as the best international gastronomy in the competition and the prize for hotel gastronomy went to "Hof Grothues Potthoff" from Senden near Münster. The category "Gastronomy in general" was won by "Essers Gasthaus" from Cologne.

Due to the many high-quality applications for the competition this year, the jury decided to award an additional special prize to the Bonn "Weinhaus Kinkel-Stuben" for "its exceptionally great commitment to wine".

"Fortunately, the wines from the German growing regions are more and more represented in the gastronomy every year, but there is still a great potential in many restaurants that is not being used. With our excellent wine restaurateurs, we want to show both wine lovers and the industry where and how the local wines are particularly well presented," said DWI Managing Director Monika Reule.

The jury, which included Selters Managing Director Otto J. Völker and well-known gastronomy experts such as Christina Fischer, Paula Bosch, Gunnar Tietz and Niko Rechenberg, set high quality standards for the assessment of the restaurants. In addition to the scope and quality of the range of wines on offer, factors such as pricing, staff training, the serving of open wines and wine related events were decisive for the judgement.

The prize for the award-winning wine restaurateurs is endowed with 3,000 euros each, which, according to the DWI, "can be used for campaigns relating to German wine". In addition, the German Wine Queen is available to the prize winners for moderating and accompanying wine events.
