A violent hailstorm caused great damage to the vineyards in St. Emilion, Entre-deux-Mers and Bergerac a few days ago. This was reported by the local media. A representative of the Gironde Chamber of Commerce estimates that around 80 percent of the vine shoots have been destroyed or damaged on some 600 to 800 hectares of vineyards. A spokesman for the Saint-Émilion CVSE wine-growers' association even estimates that 3,000 and 4,000 hectares of damaged vines on the Right Bank have been destroyed, with damage of between ten and 100 percent.

At present, however, the damage is still unclear, as many regional data have not yet been reported. In a much less severe hailstorm, vineyards in St.-Estèphe and Pauillac were also damaged. Therefore, the damage ranges from minimal damage to 100 percent loss. Hailstorms are very common in the region, which is why many châteaux are now investing in protection systems.
