The English royal family has launched the first vintage of its own sparkling wine "Windsor Great Park". The 3,000 bottles of the cuvée of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier were offered in gift packages of three bottles each and sold out quickly, according to the Telegraph.

In 2011, 16,700 vines were planted in Windsor Great Park west of London under the direction of the British wine trading company Laithwaite's. The park is owned by the English Royal Family and is under the supervision of the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip. In the 12th century, King Henry II had already planted a park near Windsor Castle. Henry II had already had wine grown in the Nauml;he of Windsor Castle.

The vines are planted in a south-facing area of about three hectares, which slopes down to the Great Meadow Pond. Due to similar natural conditions, the three grape varieties selected for the Royal Vineyard are the same as those used in Champagne. The grapes were first harvested and fermented in 2013. After the second fermentation the English Quality Sparkling Wine matured for two years in the bottle.

According to Laithwaite's, the 2014 vintage will be released in autumn 2017 and will be available at a bottle price of 35 pounds. In the next six to seven years, the Telegraph expects production to increase to 20,000 bottles.
