Last weekend, around 250,000 visitors came to the "German Wine Route Experience Day" in the Palatinate. In perfect weather with moderate temperatures and sunshine, the guests flocked in droves to the 33rd car-free Wine Route Day: "The response was overwhelming, we have never had so many visitors before," reported Frankweiler's mayor Bernd Nerding. At the end of the major event, the police spoke of a "well-attended day of experience", reporting only a few falls with minor injuries.

At the opening ceremony, Rhineland-Palatinate's Minister of Wine, Volker Wissing, pointed out that the event day with the motto "King Riesling" was "the best advertisement for our wine", while Dietmar Seefeldt, District Administrator of the Southern Wine Route, said that the event day was a unifying element for the more than 80 kilometre long German Wine Route.

"With the Palatinate as the largest Riesling region in the world and the longest wine festival in the Palatinate, we are celebrating two superlatives today," said Inga Storck, Queen of Wine of the Palatinate, pointing out that almost every fourth vine along the German Wine Route is a Riesling. So the guests cycled past thousands of Riesling vines, but many also met "King Riesling" personally. Five king actors with crown and blue shining cape had been sent on the route by the Pfalzwein-Werbung in a raffle and asked to send selfies with the king. Already in the afternoon several dozen photos arrived at Pfalzwein.
