The grape variety Red Riesling was approved a few days ago for all growing regions in Rhineland-Palatinate. The ancient variety, described as early as 1822, was rediscovered by VDP winegrower Ulrich Allendorf at the Institute for Vine Breeding at the Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences and has been officially cultivated again in Hesse since 2003. It has also been classified in Saxony and Saale-Unstrut. Many ampelographs consider the Red Riesling to be the direct descendant of the variety described for centuries.

In the meantime, five clones are already available to winegrowers for planting. In 2014, around 14 hectares in the Rheingau and around 13 hectares on the Hessische Bergstrasse were planted with Red Riesling. The yield of this grape variety is about 15 percent lower than that of the White Riesling that is common today. It is characterized by a higher must weight, 2 to 3 g/l higher sugar-free extract and lower susceptibility to rot.
