The Spanish wine region Rioja sold almost 7.5 percent less wine in 2018 than in 2017, according to the Spanish news agency Efe. According to the agency, producers sold around 263 million litres or 360 million bottles last year.

Even in Spain itself, the Rioja estates sold slightly more than five percent less. The Rioja recorded drastic declines in its most important foreign markets, Germany and Great Britain. Sales in both fell by around 16 percent in each case. In exports, the Rioja sold a total of around 96.5 million litres of wine, eleven per cent less than in 2017. The reasons for the significant decline are not known.
