Dr. Volker Wissing, Minister of Viticulture in Rhineland-Palatinate, wants to have the wine culture protected by UNESCO as an immaterial cultural heritage. He announced this at the general meeting of the German Winegrowers' Association in Neustadt an der Weinstraße.

"Wine shapes our entire federal state. Wine culture is a source of identity for the whole of Rhineland-Palatinate - and thus a cultural asset worthy of protection," said Minister of Viticulture Dr. Volker Wissing in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. Klaus Schneider, President of the German Winegrowers' Association, welcomed Wissing's proposal.

According to Wissing, the entry of our wine culture in the register is "more than a symbolic act. It documents that our wine is more than just any food, but is part of our way of life. We are committed to continuing to cultivate and strengthen our identity-creating wine culture. Without wine, Rhineland-Palatinate would be another state."

The background to his proposal: in 2016, Belgian beer culture was included in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO. The Representative List of Intangible World Cultural Heritage includes cultural expressions such as music and oral traditions as well as customs, festivals and crafts.
