With the 2018 vintage, the regional top category "First crop" in the Rheingau will be renamed "Großes Gewächs". This was announced by the Rheingauer Weinwerbung on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the "Erstes Gewächs". The producers wanted to use a "uniform name for the classification of top wines in communication with customers". In addition, a new logo with the letters "RGG" had been designed. With the introduction, the association wants to "lean on a Germany-wide terminology". The distinction between the classification "Erstes Gewächs" and the "Grosse Gewächs" of the VDP companies is very difficult for consumers. Therefore, the association wants to use a term that is "already charged with the understanding of high-quality wines".

With the introduction, the winegrowers' association has also changed the production rules: In future, large Rheingau wines may no longer contain 13 grams per litre of residual sugar, as was previously the case, but now nine grams. This is intended to make the taste profile clearer.

The dry top category "Großes Gewächs" introduced by the VDP cannot be protected under trademark law. Therefore, the Rheingauer Weinbauverband can use it freely. However, it has communicated this to the VDP from the very beginning of its deliberations.
