The traditional Rheingau winery Langwerth von Simmern in Eltville, founded in 1464, has finally given up its wine production. This is reported by weinkenner.de. The 2017 vintage has already not been bottled. The family had already sold part of the 30 hectares of vineyards a few years ago, and the remaining estate had not been cultivated anymore. The membership in the VDP was terminated at the end of 2017. 2016 was the last vintage to be bottled under the family's name.

Georg Reinhard Freiherr Langwerth von Simmern and his wife Andrea, who last looked after the wines, had been thinking about giving up wine production for a long time. According to them, the income from winegrowing was not high enough to maintain the historic estate building with park in the centre of Eltville. The family still owns large areas of land in Wichtringhausen near Hanover, the ancestral seat of the von Simmern family.

In the meantime, the Langwerther Hof with the historic estate building has been sold to a property developer who will turn it into condominiums. For the 18 hectares of vineyards still owned by the family with top sites such as the Erbacher Marcobrunn, Hattenheimer Mannberg, Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen and Rauenthaler Baiken, a "strategic partner" is currently being sought for the management.
