The area under vines in Germany is growing by 308 ha. This was announced by the Federal Agency for Agriculture and Food (BLE). Since January 2018, the BLE has received a total of 3,080 applications for cultivation permits for a total of around 834 hectares of potential wine-growing area. Of the 3,004 applications eligible for approval, around 72 per cent had come from Rhineland-Palatinate, 18 per cent from Baden-Württemberg and five per cent from Bavaria, with others from Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and North Rhine-Westphalia.

According to the BLE, "who receives how much additional acreage depends primarily on the steepness of the acreage applied for. First priority is given to sites with more than 30 percent slope, followed by sites with 15 to 30 percent slope."

Rhineland-Palatinate received the largest increase in area with 194 ha - the winegrowers, however, had applied for just under 593 ha. This is followed by Baden-Württemberg with almost 47 ha of new vineyards and Bavaria with 34.3 ha. The authorities also approved 0.6 ha in North Rhine-Westphalia, 1.7 ha in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, 3.4 ha in Lower Saxony and 3.5 ha in Schleswig-Holstein.
