On the occasion of the "Day of Austrian Sparkling Wine" on 22 October 2018, Österreich Wein Marketing presented the sparkling wines of the new, highest category "Sekt g.U. Große Reserve" for the first time in the Austrian National Library in Wien.

In 2015, the Austrian sparkling wine industry had introduced a new top category of its sparkling wine: Austrian sparkling wine with protected indication of origin, in short "Sekt g.U." with, according to its own specifications, "strict specifications on origin, harvest and production" in the three levels Klassik, Reserve and Große Reserve. As a distinctive mark, each bottle of Sekt PDO bears a red-white-red banderole on the capsule.

In 2017, the Classic and Reserve levels were first introduced to the shops after 9 and 18 months of ageing. For the "Große Reserve" now shown, these rules apply: Hand harvest, grape material from one commune or even a single vineyard, 50 percent juice yield, exclusively traditional bottle fermentation and at least 30 months of maturation on the yeast.

The Austrian sparkling wine committee has had its own glass designed for the new sparkling wine category.
