The PIWI grape variety Calardis Blanc has been approved by the Bundessortenamt for the cultivation of quality wine according to "German viticulture". This means that winegrowers no longer have to submit an application for testing, the area under cultivation is now unlimited.

The white wine variety, which has been bred at the Julius Kühn Institute Geilweiler Hof since 1993, combines various resistances to powdery and downy mildew as well as black rot with excellent cultivation properties. According to the Julius-Kühn-Institut, the wine is characterised by a "finesse-rich aroma of exotic fruits and a finely spicy bouquet". Due to its strong acidity, the variety is also well suited as a base wine for sparkling wine production. In Rhineland-Palatinate Calardis Blanc is currently cultivated on about 3.8 hectares.
