The Palatinate wine sovereigns have given the current 2019 vintage the name "climate fighter". Every year, the Pfalzwein e.V. traditionally asks for suggestions of a name that should characterize the year in which the grapes are ripened.
In this year's online survey, more than 80 name suggestions from all regions of Germany were submitted. The final decision was made by the four new Palatinate Wine Queens and the Princesses, who chose a proposal that addresses one of the top issues of 2019: climate change. Therefore, they decided in favour of the proposal "climate fighter". With frost, hailstorms, a tornado and heat spells, the Palatinate winegrowers had to endure several weather capers until the grapes could be harvested.
The first Palatinate vintage with this name already existed in 1929 and was called "Graf Zeppelin" - named after the German airship that set off to circumnavigate the world shortly before the harvest began.
