The Director General of the Organisation Internationale de la vigne et du vin (OIV), Jean-Marie Aurand, presented in Paris the figures for world viticulture in 2016. According to these figures, 267 million hectolitres of wine were produced last year. This represents a decrease of three percent compared to the previous year. In 2016, the area under vines worldwide remained more or less the same at 7.5 million hectares. The same applies to wine consumption: at 242 million hectolitres, it remained at about the same level as in 2016. At 104 million hectolitres, world trade in wine declined by 1.2 percent in terms of volume. However, at 29 billion euros, the value recorded an increase of two percent.

In terms of cultivation area, Chinese wine in particular grew significantly: compared to 2015, the area under cultivation increased by a whopping 16,800 hectares to 847,000 hectares. In Europe, the figures change only slightly. Only in Italy did the vineyard area increase by 8,200 hectares. In Portugal and Turkey, however, less wine was grown. According to the figures, the front-runner in terms of vineyard area remains Spain with almost one million hectares, followed by China with 847,000 hectares, France with 790,000 hectares, Italy with 690,000 hectares and Turkey with 480,000 hectares.

The largest producer country in the world remains Italy with 50.9 million hectolitres, followed by France with 43.5 million hectolitres and Spain with 39.3 million hectolitres.

According to OIV figures, the world's largest wine consumption in 2016 was recorded by the USA with 31.8 million hectolitres, followed by France with 27 million, Italy with 22.5 million, Germany with 20.2 million and China with 17.3 million hectolitres. Less wine than in 2015 was consumed in Hungary, Argentina and Romania.
