In 2018, more than 50 million litres of Austrian wine worth 170.3 million euros were exported. This is 6.9 percent more than in the previous year. This is a new record, reports Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM). Domestic wine is also extremely successful in Austria: in supermarkets and discounters it has achieved an increase in sales from 6.9 per cent to 58.3 per cent market share in 2018. Foreign wines had to accept a minus of 10.5 per cent. In terms of value, the market share of Austrian wine there, with an increase of five per cent, now stands at 70.5 per cent.

According to ÖWM, wine from Austria has achieved "great results" in the gastronomy sector in 2018 with 90.3 per cent sales and 88.3 per cent market share in terms of turnover. Despite slight losses in quantity, it "continues to be the undisputed market dominator".

According to ÖWM, a significant share of the "excellent export figures" was accounted for by buyer countries outside the EU, whose share of the total export value in 2018 had already reached almost 30 percent. According to the study, the United States, for example, with 19.7 percent more volume and 21.2 percent increase in value, as well as Canada with 66 percent volume increase and 62.6 percent increase in value, show striking growth rates.
