The organically cultivated vineyard area in Italy is growing rapidly: according to EU figures, it will increase by 24 percent to 101,290 hectares in 2016. This means that its share has risen to 16 percent of all vineyards in Italy. Around 65,000 hectares have already been certified, and another 37,000 hectares are currently undergoing conversion.

The highest proportion of organic vineyards is currently in Sicily: the 39,000 hectares on the island account for 38 percent of all organically cultivated vineyards in Italy. According to the figures, Apulia is in second place with 15 percent, followed by Tuscany with twelve percent.

In the north of the country, the organic share is much smaller. In Lombardy, around 14 percent of the vineyards are organically cultivated, in Trentino-Alto Adige the figure is 6.8 percent, in Piedmont 6.1 percent, in Veneto 5.2 percent and in Friuli 4.2 percent.
