In the course of next year, the Prosecco DOC consortium intends to introduce the "Brutnature" designation for sparkling wines with three grams of residual sugar per litre. At present, however, those responsible are still waiting for approval from the Italian Ministry of Agriculture. Over the past 18 months, the consortium has been working intensively on the rules and requirements of producers for this category, said chairman Luca Giavi. He hopes that the approval will be granted in Rome in 2018.

At present, Prosecco only includes quite broad categories such as Brut, which ranges from zero to twelve grams of residual sugar, and Extra Dry, which ranges from more than twelve to 18 grams, Giavi criticized. The new categories would make it clearer to consumers what they were buying - and this should help to further increase sales, he said.
