New frost hit many regions of the Bordelais and Champagne region particularly hard during the night of 26 to 27 April. Meteorologists expect severe ground frost during the night to continue over the weekend. Especially in free, unprotected locations in the plain, a lot of shoots froze to death, Xavier Coumau, president of the Négociant Association in Bordeaux told "Wine Spectator". His early morning observation: "We lost about half of our yield in the Bordelais tonight."

This time, the Right Bank, with Pomerol and St. Emilion, was very badly affected: Stéphan Derenoncourt, adviser and owner of Château de l'A in Castillon, told Wine Spectator: "The loss is everywhere. Often the damage is 100 percent. Only the plateaus and the highest points of the vineyards have been spared. It is dramatic." Vineyards on the plains and at the foot of the vineyards have suffered the greatest losses.

Pessac and Raves are also affected, but no estimates are available. In St Julien, on the other hand, the damage is only about ten to 15 percent. Experts calculate that the dramatic cold spell was the worst since 1991.

In the Champagne region, the frost has now lost a total of about 20 to 25 percent of the yield, the experts of the CIVC reckon. In the Montagne des Reims region and in the westernmost part of the Champagne region, the association estimates that the loss is as high as 35 percent or more. In contrast, the vineyards in the south of the region have hardly been damaged. However, according to the CIVC, 7,000 kg of grapes per hectare, converted to the area under cultivation, are stored in the cellars of all producers, so that there should be no overall supply bottlenecks. For individual producers, however, the situation is threatening their existence.

In many regions of Burgundy, too, it is said to have become very frosty once again. However, no precise observations or estimates for the growing region are currently available.
