The Italian wine authorities have approved a new DOC in Piedmont. In 2019, wines of the DOC Monferrato Nebbiolo may be produced for the first time. The new production area covers 600 hectares of vineyards with more than 500 wineries, the Consorzio Barbera d'Asti e Vini del Monferrato announced. The first wines will appear in 2020 at the earliest.

The regulations issued for this purpose provide for a maximum harvest of 9,000 kg per hectare and 8,000 kg per hectare for Monferrato Nebbiolo Superiore. The Nebbiolo must mature for at least twelve months from November 1st after harvesting, while the Superiore is aged for 18 months, at least six of which must be in wooden barrels. The alcohol content is at least 12 and 12.5 percent.
