A few days ago, the French Ministry of Agriculture approved the new concept of the Wine Estate Association "Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc" for a three-level Cru Bourgeois classification in the Medoc approved. This means that the wines harvested and approved in 2018 will appear on the market for the first time in 2020 in the three categories "Cru Bourgeois", "Cru Bourgeois Supérieur" and "Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel".

The ministerial approval of the concept thus put an end to years of dispute among the winegrowers in the Bordelais. A regulation had already been passed in 2003, which the Bordeaux court overturned in 2007 following complaints by companies that had not been considered. A commission decides on the classification of the wineries, which must submit detailed dossiers to it by autumn 2018. According to the rules, the classification rules are to be revised every five years

At present, the alliance comprises around 300 Médoc wineries, and in 2015 271 wineries were classified as Cru Bourgeois. According to the rules, 18 months after the harvest, the wines are evaluated in a blind tasting. Other criteria include the estate's bottling, no barrel sales, random sampling of wines from the trade and a number of conditions relating to sustainability and the environment.
