Maximilian Wilm from Kinfelts Kitchen & Wine in Hamburg won the final of the fifth Sommelier Trophy in Neustadt an der Weinstraße. The competition is organised by the Sommelier-Union Deutschland every two years to choose the "Best Sommelier in Germany". In the final, 31-year-old Wilm competed against second-placed Julian Schweighart from the luxury Hotel Fontenay in Hamburg and third-placed Marco Gulino from Landau. The trained restaurant specialist is thus the successor of world champion Marc Almert, who won the Sommelier Trophy two years ago.
"The last weeks of preparation were really intensive because the range of topics is incredibly broad. As a sommelier, I get to deal with wine in just as much detail as I do with beer, spirits or tea," said Maximilian Wilm, "which is why the Sommelier Trophy always involves a bit of luck, because you simply can't know everything!" Maximilian Wilm will represent Germany at the European Sommelier Championship 2020 in Cyprus.
