According to a report by the science magazine phys.org, internationally operating companies such as Krug, Moet & Chandon or Veuve Clicquot are responsible for 72 percent of sales. Their sales figures rose moderately by 0.4 per cent compared to 2016, but the sales of the small producers fell by 4.9 per cent or 2.5 million bottles, the magazine reports. This is because 80 per cent of their bottles are only sold in France - and competition is very tough there. Compared to 2007, the independent producers had sold around 25 percent fewer bottles in 2016. According to the Champagne Comité, only 4,400 of the total of around 15,800 wineries in Champagne are still producing their own bottles. Therefore, more and more producers are selling their grapes at a good price to the big houses instead of growing them themselves.
