At the fourth Trophy of the Sommelier-Union Germany at the Grand Elysée Hotel in Hamburg, Marc Almert from the Pavillon restaurant at the Baur au Lac, Zurich, won the title of "Best Sommelier in Germany".

In the competition, the six candidates first had 30 minutes in a written test to answer 30 questions from the entire world of beverages. Then, among other things, they had to perform a perfect champagne service from a magnum bottle, recognise sherry categories and beer styles, prepare a cocktail, design a wine and food combination and communicate it in a foreign language.

The three remaining candidates, Florian Richter, Maximilian Wilm and Marc Almert, had a really tough time in the afternoon on the stage of the Spiegelsaal in Hamburg's Grand Elysée in front of more than 150 spectators and the prominent jury. The jury included two Master Sommeliers, a Sommelier World Champion and a Master of Wine.

Among other things, a red wine and three spirits had to be correctly identified and an incorrect wine list had to be corrected. "An unusual task was the recognition of tea varieties based on the tea leaves and their smell. This shows that it is far from sufficient for a top sommelier to only know about wine. However, the winner Marc Almert also mastered this task with bravura," said Peer F. Holm, President of the Sommelier-Union Germany and emphasised: "We have outstanding talent in Germany. This is still too often overlooked by the public."
