The 27-year-old Marc Almert from Germany won the competition for the "Best Sommelier in the World" in Antwerp. Almert works in the luxury hotel Baur du Lac in Zurich. In the ASI competition of the Belgian Sommelier Guild, 66 sommeliers from 63 countries competed against each other. For Marc Almert it was the first participation in the competition, which was held over three demanding rounds. Besides wine knowledge, questions and tasks concerning service, food pairing and commercial calculations had to be answered.

In the final round Almert competed in front of 1,100 spectators against Nina Højgaard Jensen from the "Kong Hans Kælder" restaurant in Copenhagen and Raimonds Tomsonsons from the "Vincents" restaurant in Riga (Latvia). They simulated situations in the restaurant, where they had to prove their skills and knowledge about other drinks as well.
