Louis Roederer grows 50 percent of his grapes in his vineyards according to biodynamic guidelines. This was announced by the Champagne House. According to Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon, Roederer's chief oenologist, 115 hectares of the total 230 hectares of cultivated land were converted. The total area would produce 70 percent of the required grapes. The cuvées for the top champagne Cristal have been produced entirely from biodynamically grown grapes since 2012. Cristal 2008, which was presented a few weeks ago, was produced from 40 percent of these grapes

However, Lécaillon has only had these vineyards certified biologically close to EU guidelines, as wines from conventionally cultivated grapes are also produced in the Roederer-Keller. This is not possible according to biodynamic Demeter guidelines. Only ten hectares are Demeter certified.

In the long term, Louis Roederer will convert more vineyards in order to achieve 100% biodynamic cultivation. But neither the organic certificate nor the biodynamic cultivation would ever appear on the label, the farm director Frédéric Rouzaud emphasised: "That will never be on the label As the next step towards environmentally friendly production, the management will take care of the C02 footprint, for example with electrically powered tractors.
