With new cultivation methods, the companies united in the Portuguese association of cork producers APCOR (Associação Portuguesa da Cortiça) want to drastically accelerate the cork harvest. Instead of 25 years, a cork oak would in future only have to grow for eight to nine years until the first harvest. This was explained by its president João Rui Ferreira in Porto.

Currently, out of 18.5 billion filled bottles worldwide per year, about 12 billion are fitted with a cork or a closure made of cork granulate. Due to the drastic reduction of the TCA problem achieved by the manufacturers, sales had increased by about 4.5 per cent in both 2017 and 2016.

The association members had invested a total of about 500 million euros in research into the formation of TCA and its prevention.

With the help of experts from many universities, cork oak cultivation has also been researched. The most important result: With the help of precisely calculated irrigation methods, the harvest, according to Ferreira, is possible in a drastically faster rhythm already after about eight to new years. A cork oak can be harvested several times in the course of its life, which can last up to about 100 years.
