In 2018 Italy exported wine to a record value of 6.2 billion euros. This is 3.3 percent more than in 2017, the Unione Italiana Vini (UIV) announced on the basis of figures from the agricultural market research institute ISMEA. According to the figures, however, sales volumes fell by a whopping eight percent to 19.8 million hectolitres. The reasons are the small harvest in 2017, but also a significantly lower demand.

According to UIV, the most important wine category in exports is sparkling wine. Hir sales rose by 11.2 per cent to 1.5 billion euros, while the sales volume increased by 5.7 per cent to 3.9 million hectolitres. Prosecco once again proved to be the sales driver: it recorded a 15 percent increase in sales and a ten percent rise in sales volume. Germany remains one of the most important customers for Prosecco. Here, the sparkling wine was able to record twelve percent more sales, even though the quantity only increased by three percent.

For still wines, on the other hand, the UIV recorded a five percent decline in the total export volume. However, the average price per bottle also rose by five percent. In Germany, the number of bottles sold even fell by ten percent, while prices rose by four percent.
