A committee of inquiry of the French "Institut national de l'origine et de la qualité" (Inao) is currently reviewing the appellations of Burgundy and intends to withdraw the AOC status of about 7,000 hectares of vineyards. About 5,500 ha are planted with vines. The Burgundy winegrowers have announced fierce resistance to this. A total of 64 areas are affected, including many near Chablis, six near Dijon and 23 near Châtillon. The committee members argue that in the past ten years, these areas have not continuously grown wine according to the AOC rules. However, this is a prerequisite for being part of the Burgundy wine region. On the other hand, 43 areas in Beaujolais that have not yet been classified are to be added to the AOC. The plots in the south of the Beaujolais are thus released for the production of Burgundy.

The winegrowers and winegrowers have now drafted a petition and want to demonstrate against this in front of the Inao headquarters. The Burgundy production area comprises about 24,000 hectares of vineyards, about 70 percent of which are classified as AOC.
