The jury of Vinum magazine has selected the winners of the German Red Wine Award 2017. Of the 1840 wines entered, 475 had reached the final tasting. The wineries from the Palatinate were the winners: They took first place four times and second place three times in the various categories.

Thus, Weingut Zelt from Laumersheim won in the cuvées, the Frühburgunder from Weingut Neiss from Kindenheim in the "German classics", the Portugieser from Weingut Bremer from Zellertal in the "underrated grape varieties" and Weingut Matthias Gaul, Asselheim, in the top discipline Pinot Noir.

The Baden wine region was successful three times. First place in the Lemberger category was taken by Weingut Thomas Seeger from Leimen, the Merlot from Weingut Fritz Waßmer from Bad Krozingen-Schlatt won in the "International Classics" category and the Spätburgunder Beerenauslese from Weingut Konrad Schlör from Reicholzheim won in the noble sweet wines category. In addition, Baden wineries won silver three times.

Württemberg presented the winners in the category "New Breeds" with the Zweigelt wines from the Escher Winery in Schwaikheim and from the Jürgen Ellwanger Winery in Winterbach. In addition, Württemberg winegrowers took second place five times and third place four times.

The special prize for the "Newcomer of the Year" was awarded to Katja Rettig from Westhofen in Rhine-Hesse.
