The Baden-Württemberg Minister for Rural Areas and Consumer Protection, Peter Hauk (CDU), expects frost damage "in the three-digit million range" for winegrowers and farmers. The minister told the Südwest-Rundfunk (SWR) radio station. The first balance sheet of his ministry was "devastating". Throughout the state, the damage was three to four times higher than in the dramatic frost year 2011. 7,000 of the approximately 28,000 hectares of vineyards in Baden-Württemberg suffered severe damage - including total losses. However, the exact amount will only be known in a few weeks. "At this scale, we can speak of a frost of the century that has led to a catastrophe for our winegrowers and farmers," said the Minister. The last time the damage was similarly massive was in 1981.

In an interview with SWR radio, Hauk held out the prospect of rapid assistance for the farmers and winegrowers affected: "We are currently examining all possibilities for assistance at state and federal level. I have therefore already sent a letter to the Minister of Finance with the request that tax relief be made available for farms damaged by frost". Furthermore, the Landwirtschaftliche Rentenbank had been asked to open up its liquidity aid programme for frost-damaged farms.

In addition, the wineries could submit further applications for restructuring their vineyards in 2017, grub up totally damaged vineyards and replant the vines under the existing EU support programme.
